Focus On: Elm Drinks Cabinet and Purple Bookcase

Here’s a recent project that's been in the works for a while now. Read on to find out more about the Elm Drinks Cabinet and Purple Bookcase.

The Beginning

The brief was to create a bookcase and drinks cabinet for the client with storage to hide paperwork. After several discussions with the client we decided to go for a homegrown timber which is full of character - Scottish Elm.

The Process

The client was mulling over a few options for the drinks cabinet doors, but after seeing a sample of our tambour doors they were sold.

The light wood of the tambour doors sets off against the purple bookcase makes for a beautiful contrast. With this, we supplied the perfect combination of functionality and finesse.

The client originally wanted an off white bookcase for a classic look - however they were urged to go bold with an on-trend colour - and they thankfully took our advice. Using this deep purple colour from https://www.farrow-ball.com/paint-colours/pelt - this created a strong and luxurious feel that can appear almost black in low light - giving extra dimension to the piece that can transform depending on the time of day.

The Finished Product

Hand turned elm with brass detailing for the handles tied to everything together, setting the cabinet off against the purple again.

Designs are underway for the clients desk - following a similar style - which will also be handcrafted from Scottish Elm.

It’s been fantastic working with this client and having the freedom to explore new ideas and approaches.

Special thanks to https://www.englishwoodlandstimber.co.uk/ who supplied the timber we worked with on this piece.
